  • Do I need to pump my septic tank?

Yes! There's no such thing as a system that does not need maintenance or septic pumping services. Every system may be slightly different, but any septic will still need to be maintained.

  • How does a septic system work?

In most septic systems there are three layers:

    • Crust (on top)
    • Water (in the middle)
    • Sludge (on bottom)

There are bacteria in the septic tank that will eat at the crust until it forms waste and sinks to the bottom to form the sludge. As long as there are baffles in place and functioning, the water is all that should flow to the soil treatment area.

If you need drain cleaning services, this may indicate an imbalance in your septic tank.

  • Can I prevent clogged drain lines?

There are various ways to help prevent clogged drain lines. Some essential tips include not putting grease, excessive soap, or food down the drain.

For more proactive septic owners, placing a strainer on the end of a washing machine drain hose will catch lint and other objects that would have ended up in your septic tank. Similarly, placing a strainer on bathtub and shower drains will catch hair and other objects before they go down your drain.

Implementing these suggestions is a great way to prevent the need for frequent drain cleaning services.
